AF ANNOUNCES NEW POETRY COMPETITION SERIES     

NEW YORK, NY (February 26, 2010) THE ARTISTS FORUM (AF) invites all emerging and established artists to participate in its first poetry competition: THE ARTISTS FORUM INTERNATIONAL POETRY COMPETITION (AF-IPOE)


The AF-IPOE is open to artists worldwide and seeks to:

•Engage artists by challenging them to present their best work for juried selection.

•Provide much needed exposure for under-served artists by showcasing their work to the public.

•Enhance artist communications and business contacts.


The AF-IPOE offers artists a chance to have their work critiqued by some of the art world’s most influential professionals, win valuable prizes, opportunities, and get published! (See AF website for juror bios & prize listings). With an entry fee of $15 per entry, artists may affordably enter as many works as they wish

CONTEST DEADLINE: EXTENDED TO JUNE 30, 2010


Winning entries will be promoted to literary industry personnel and the public-at-large via an array of media avenues.  Winning artists will also be eligible to receive private mentoring sessions from industry leaders and included in a special AF published annual.  Look for MORE AF Juried Competitions in music, photography, film/video, and other disciplines in 2010!

2010 AF-IPOE THEME: "CAPTIVATE"

This year’s task is to challenge artists to show interpretations for the word "captivate". 


The word "captivate" (and its derivatives) can be illustrated as a verb, noun, adverb, adjective, or phrase - be it physically, mentally, socially, politically, sexually. For example, as a verb: to enthrall, charm, enchant, bewitch, fascinate, beguile, entrance, enrapture, delight, attract, allure; engross, mesmerize, spellbind, hypnotize.  As a transitive verb: attract and hold the interest and attention of; charm: he was captivated by her beauty.  As an adjective: "a captivating smile". Additional Derivatives include: captivatingly (adverb), captivation (noun).

JUROR BIOS


TOM HEALY: Art world veteran Tom Healy has published poems and essays about artists in the Paris Review, Yale Review, Tin House, Salmagundi, BOMB and many other publications.  His recent book "What the Right Hand Knows" was released to rave reviews.  Tom was one of the pioneers of Chelsea, opening one of the first galleries there in 1994.  He later served as president of Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, where he led efforts to rebuild New York’s downtown arts community after 9/11.  Tom teaches at the Pratt Institute in New York and the Goreé Institute in Dakar, Senegal and serves on the boards of Creative Time and Poets House.  He studied at Harvard and Columbia.

STEVEN G. FULLWOOD: is the author of FUNNY, co-editor of the books Think Again and To Be Left With the Body. He is also the founder and publisher at Vintage Entity Press.  For over a decade, Steven has been a freelance writer whose work has appeared in various publications including Library Journal, Black Issues Book Review, XXL, Vibe, and Lambda Book Report.  Since 1998, Fullwood has served as an archivist at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in New York City. He is also is the founder and project director for the Black Gay and Lesbian Archive at the Schomburg Center.  In 2005 Fullwood was honored with a New York Times Librarian Award.

PATRICIA SPEARS JONES: Arkansas native Patricia Spears Jones has lived in New York City since the mid-1970s where she has been involved in the city's poetry and theater scenes as poet, editor, anthologist, teacher and former Program Coordinator for the Poetry Project at St. Mark’s Church and working with Mabou Mines, the internationally acclaimed theater collective.  Spears Jones  received her BA from Rhodes College and her MFA from Vermont College.  She is author of two collections: The Weather That Kills  published by Coffee House Press (1995)  and Femme du Monde  from Tia Chucha Press (2006) and two chapbooks: Repuestas! (Belladonna, 2007) and Mythologizing Always (Telephone Books, 1981).  She was the co-editor for Ordinary Women: Poems of New York City Women. In addition, she has commissioned and produced a few plays. Her poem, "Beuys and the Blonde" was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. She has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, the Goethe Institute for travel and research in Germany.
